Preparing Toccata for sail requires these activities:
Before you get to the boat
- Check weather reports
- Check Sailflow for wind predictions
- Check wind reports for current wind predictions
- Check tide
- Check sailing instructions (if it’s a regatta or race)
- Bring appropriate clothing and gear
- Bring provisions as requested
At the Boat
- Lower the boat into the water until the boat is all the way in the water and slings are unloaded (they start to bend)
- Adjust the amount of slack in the slings to keep the wind from pushing the boat onto the finger piers
- hose off dirt and bird poop from the deck and cockpit
- A/C off the boat
- AC accessories stowed on the boat
- shore power disconnected and stowed on the boat
- battery charger unplugged and unhooked from battery
- tiller and compass cover off and stored below
- trash bag rigged
- coolers filled
- check bilge and pump as needed
- tune rig for the day’s wind forecast
- Lubricate shackles, slides, and other hardware with McLube as needed
- select jib and bring to fore deck
- tie jib sheets to jib with bowline
- attach jib halyard to jib and tape the shackle
- slide the jib head through the feeder and barely into the luff foil, take out slack in jib halyard so the sail stays in the foil. snap foredeck bungee cords over jib to hold in place.
- install the tweakers
- run the spin sheets from the blocks at near the stern to the tweakers and to the port side of the companionway and tie them off. the starboard sheet will have to pass outside the shrouds and around the headstay to to port side. be sure the sheets are outside the lifelines
- Mount the rock box on the mast, power on, and select the desired display
- take gas can from dock box and load on boat
- two winch handles into the cockpit
- mount tiller extension on tiller
- power on instruments
- prepare the spinnaker pole
- rig downhaul and topping lift
- attach spin sheets
- attach spin halyard to spin head and tape the shackle
- run the tapes on the spinnaker
- Select the main and bring on deck
- Ease outhaul
- Attach outhaul to the main clew
- Attach the main tack at the fast pin
- Flake main onto boom an tie with sail ties
- Attach main halyard to main head
- Feed head of main into mast groove
